Last Tuesday Bank Australia announced their Clean Energy Home Loans, where Australians who are purchasing a home rated 7 stars or higher qualify for a 0.40% discount on their home finance per annum. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation, on behalf of the Australian Government have supported Bank Australia with an investment of up to $60M to work at lowering Australia’s emissions. This scheme aims to reduce the emissions of the property sector which amounts to just under 25% of the nations greenhouse gas emissions.

This discount applies to those who buy or build a 7+ Star Home under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). The Clean Energy Home Loan will also be extended in coming months to those who make eligible green renovations and existing home loans. The discount rate applies for 5 years and is for mortgages below $1.5M. A seven star rating is higher than the minimum standard in most states and is based on how much heating and cooling a house needs to stay comfortable all year round. The maximum ten star rating is achieved when homes may not need any artificial heating or cooling at all in order to be comfortable.
