HOW TO DESIGN AN EASY TO CLEAN BATHROOM

There are many things to consider when designing a new bathroom, but how to keep it clean might not be top of your mind when you’re looking at tap finishes and tile colours. With a little forward planning, though, you can design a bathroom that stays fresh and tidy with minimal effort.

Identify the Enemy
“Mould is the number-one enemy in the bathroom,” says Eva Byrne, “so all choices should relate to preventing it from growing.”
To stop mould developing in the first place, use an overhead exhaust fan. This should be in addition to an operable window or roof light.

Tile Walls for a Quick Clean
To cut down on time spent repainting or cleaning walls, opt for a tiled finish rather than paint or wallpaper. “Painted walls can get dirty very quickly in a bathroom,” says Ana Rezende, “but tiled walls are quick and easy to clean with a damp cloth.”
This will be particularly useful in areas where hands are frequently brushing against walls, such as near the basin, next to wall-hung towel hooks, or around light switches.

Choose Wall-hung Vanity’s
Use a wall-hung vanity unit to keep the floor as free as possible. It makes it so much easier to clean around the entire area.
You should also choose streamlined fittings when possible as they are the easiest to clean.

Lay an Easy-clean Floor
Practicality is key in a bathroom, and your choice of flooring can be crucial to the amount of time you need to spend cleaning it.
For example don’t put textured porcelain tiles on the floor, and use larger tiles to reduce the amount of grout.

Be Aware of Hard-water Build-up
Always use white or light coloured grout. The reason? Minerals in hard water can cause a white bloom to build up on tiles and grout, and this will be much more visible on dark surfaces. As a Wagga Builder we know that the level of calcium in our water is higher than other areas, which has to be taken in account when selecting your finishes, You’ll still need to keep on top of cleaning pale-coloured tiles and grout, but the daily build-up between cleans will be much less noticeable.

Fit a fuss-free shower screen
Shower doors and screens get soaked frequently, so they’ll need cleaning often to prevent mould and limescale build-up.
By choosing a hinged shower door as opposed to a sliding or bi-fold one there are fewer spots for water to linger and mould to form. You could also eliminate a shower screen altogether and instead choose a shower nook. Completely tiled means no glass to clean.

Ensure you fit a waste trap
Little and often is a good mantra to follow when it comes to cleaning, and a small preventative measure, such as a waste trap, can be a big help in cutting down on future housework.
“Always make sure you have a waste with a hair trap in both your basin and shower,” says Rezende. “You can then frequently remove it and quickly clean it to avoid hair clogging up waste pipes and prevent it from becoming an issue.”
